Young people and family

A child means someone aged under 14 and young person means someone aged 14 or over but under 18. Parent means someone with parental responsibility.y

Check if your family members can get pre-settled status or settled status

If you’re an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen living in the UK, some of your family can also apply to come and live in the UK.

Getting a visa for family and friends to visit the UK

Your friend or family member can apply for a visa so they can visit you in the UK. Visas to visit the UK are usually for up to 6 months.

Complain about a local council's involvement with your family

If you’re not happy with the way your local council has dealt with you, your child or a child you’re responsible for, you can complain. If your complaint is about a child protection order and there is an ongoing court case, you should get legal advice first. Complaining won’t change a child protection order and it might make the situation worse.

Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is behaviour from a family member, partner or ex-partner. It can include: physical or sexual abuse, violent or threatening behaviour, psychological or emotional abuse, coercive behaviour - for example, humiliation or intimidation, controlling behaviour - for example, making someone feel less important or dependent on the abuser, 'economic abuse' - this includes controlling someone's possessions or how they earn or spend money

Contraception

Contraceptive advice and supplies are available free on the NHS through GPs and family planning clinics. You can get emergency contraception, for example, the morning-after pill, from your GP, family planning clinics, most NHS walk-in centres and some pharmacies. You can also get condoms.

Transferring property for the benefit of children

When a relationship ends, a court can order the transfer or settlement of a family home to a child or to their parent or guardian - if it's for the child's benefit.

Agreeing maintenance between you

You can arrange child maintenance directly with each other. This is called making a private or ‘family-based’ arrangement. You don’t have to follow any rules for a private arrangement. You can include whatever you want in it as long as you both agree. For example, you could agree one of you will cover the cost of a holiday or school uniforms instead of making regular payments

Getting help from social services if you're homeless

Social services might be able to find you somewhere to live if you're homeless and: 16 to 17 and you don't have family you can live with 16 to 17 and you've recently been living in care responsible for a child who normally lives with you ill, disabled or have mental health needs
