One in two of us will be given a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime - this shocking statistic led Macmillan to fund a Citizens Advice service fourteen years ago and the partnership is still flourishing today.
Citizens Advice Portsmouth are proud to host two advisers who provide a holistic service to anyone affected by cancer who lives or is being treated for cancer in the county of Hampshire.
The team in Portsmouth, with their colleagues across Hampshire, staff an advice line which is operational from 9am – 2pm Monday to Friday. Callers have access to trained advisers who can give advice, assist with benefit claims, look to maximise income or signpost to other support services in the area. If we are unable to assist over the telephone, we would look to book an appointment in one of several outreach locations or in our city centre office. For those unable to come to us we can also offer a home visit.
One of the most recent changes affecting cancer patients is the definition of ‘terminal illness’. From the 3rd of April 2023 people who are thought to be in their final year of life are able to receive vital financial support through the ‘Special Rules’ in place to enable quick and efficient help six months earlier than they were previously. Those who are eligible are not required to attend a medical assessment and, in most cases, they will receive the highest rate of benefits.
If you are affected by cancer and would like to talk to the team, call the advice line on 0344 747 7727.
